A small beach city of 20,000 year-round residents somehow supports dozens of excellent restaurants — driven by the millions of visitors who demand good food alongside their beach time. The emphasis is heavily on fresh Gulf seafood, though every cuisine is represented.
Best Seafood Restaurants
The Original Oyster House — A Gulf Shores institution since 1983. Waterfront setting on Mobile Bay, legendary steamed oysters, fresh Gulf shrimp, and crab claws. The view alone is worth the trip. Consistently rated one of the best seafood restaurants in Alabama.
Gulf Shores Steamer — The go-to for steamed seafood buckets. Load up on shrimp, crab legs, clams, and corn in a casual, no-frills setting. Perfect for families and groups. Expect a wait on summer weekends.
Cobalt the Restaurant — Upscale seafood with a creative menu that goes well beyond the standard fried basket. Gulf snapper, local crab, and fresh catch prepared with care. One of the better fine-dining options in the area.
Lulu's — Owned by Lucy Buffett (Jimmy's sister), LuLu's is part restaurant, part Gulf Coast experience. Live music, a massive outdoor space, a beach, and very good food. The shrimp and grits and Gulf fish tacos are standouts. Extremely popular — go early or expect a wait.
💡 Pro tip: The freshest seafood is at restaurants that list their catch sources. Ask your server what came in that morning — Gulf red snapper and flounder in season are exceptional.
Casual & Local Favorites
Pink Pony Pub — An Alabama beach institution. Right on the Gulf, cold drinks, good burgers, and live music on weekends. More of an experience than a restaurant, but the food is solid and the vibe is peak Gulf Shores.
Sunliner Diner — A 1950s-style diner with great breakfasts, burgers, and milkshakes. Family friendly, affordable, and consistently good. A favorite of the local crowd.
Bahama Bob's Beach Side Cafe — Casual beach bar with solid food and an unbeatable location. Good for a quick lunch between beach sessions.
Upscale & Waterfront Dining
Coast Restaurant — One of Gulf Shores' most refined dining experiences. Modern Gulf Coast cuisine, excellent wine list, and a sophisticated atmosphere. Good for a special occasion dinner.
Sassy Bass Island Grille — Waterfront dining on the Intracoastal Waterway. Fresh catch, good cocktails, and a relaxed upscale atmosphere. The sunset views from the deck are exceptional.
Breakfast & Brunch
Another Broken Egg Cafe — A popular chain but done well here. Creative egg dishes, good coffee, and a beach-town atmosphere. Expect waits on weekend mornings in summer.
Gulf Shores Coffee & Booksellers — For a quieter start to the day, this local coffee shop with a bookshelf-lined interior is a great find. Good pastries, excellent coffee, and a respite from the beach-town buzz.
Dining Near The Hangout
The area around The Hangout on Gulf Place is the most concentrated dining district in Gulf Shores. Within walking distance you'll find everything from Lulu's and The Hangout itself to pizza, ice cream, and casual seafood. It gets very busy in summer — parking is a challenge from June through August, and most restaurants don't take reservations. Go early (before 6pm) or late (after 8:30pm) to avoid the longest waits.

Summer waits are real. June through August, the best restaurants can have 45–90 minute waits on weekend evenings. Go early, put your name in and walk the beach, or choose a weeknight.
Seafood is always the right call. The Gulf Coast supply chain is excellent — shrimp, oysters, crab, and fresh fish caught that morning are Gulf Shores' genuine strengths. Don't order a burger when you're this close to the source.
Happy hour is your friend. Many restaurants offer significant discounts 3–6pm. Pink Pony, LuLu's, and several others have excellent happy hour deals that can cut the bill considerably.
