Best Time to Visit Gulf Shores
May is arguably the sweet spot — water temps reach the mid-70s, air temps are warm but not oppressive, and you'll beat the peak summer crowds. Hotels and rental rates are lower than June through August. Spring break traffic (March–April) adds some activity but Gulf Shores handles it well.
September and October are the hidden gem months. Summer crowds have gone home, water stays warm through October, and rates drop significantly. Many locals consider fall their favorite time of year. The only caution: hurricane season runs through November.
June through August is peak season — maximum energy, all attractions open, the beach is electric, but also maximum prices and traffic. If you're bringing kids on school schedules this is your window.
Winter (December–February) is quiet, cool, and genuinely lovely if you want solitude. Most restaurants and attractions remain open. Highs in the 60s are perfect for walking the beach without a crowd in sight.

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through mid-October. Gulf Shores sits in a region historically affected by Gulf of Mexico storms. Major storms in recent memory include Hurricane Ivan (2004) and Hurricane Sally (2020), which caused significant flooding and wind damage.
This doesn't mean you should avoid visiting during this period — the vast majority of hurricane season days are perfectly pleasant. But it does mean staying informed. If you're vacationing, purchase trip insurance. If you're buying property, understand flood zone designations and budget properly for insurance. The National Hurricane Center is the authoritative source for storm tracking.
Water Temperatures
The Gulf of Mexico water off Gulf Shores is famously warm — warmer than most Atlantic beach destinations at comparable latitudes. Water temps peak at 84°F in July and August, making it feel more like a warm bath than an ocean swim. The water stays comfortably swimmable (70°F+) from late April through October. Even in November, the water often lingers in the mid-60s — cold for swimming but beautiful for wading.
What to Pack
Summer: Light breathable clothing, reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50+), rash guards for extended water time, a light rain layer for afternoon storms, water shoes for rocky areas near Perdido Pass.
Spring/Fall: Layers — mornings can be cool (60s) while afternoons hit the 80s. A light jacket for evenings. Sunscreen still essential.
Winter: A proper jacket for evenings, comfortable walking shoes, layers. The beach in winter is gorgeous and uncrowded — worth experiencing.
